The large thread rolling machine with ZR 90° feeding is a high-precision, heavy-duty cold-forming system engineered to produce external threads on cylindrical workpieces through a plastic deformation process. Unlike traditional machining methods that cut or grind material away, this machine utilizes hardened roller dies to cold-form threads, enhancing both the mechanical strength and surface integrity of the finished part.

Key Technical Features

✅ ZR 90° Cross Feeding Mechanism

  • The "ZR" designation refers to a cross-feeding system, where two roller dies are mounted perpendicular to the axis of the workpiece.

  • One die is movable, and the other remains stationary during operation.

  • This configuration ensures even pressure distribution, precise thread geometry, and uniform surface finish.

✅ Cold Forming Process

  • Threads are formed via plastic deformation, not cutting — preserving material grain structure.

  • Results in:

    • Increased fatigue resistance

    • Higher tensile and yield strength

    • Improved corrosion resistance due to smoother surfaces

✅ High Production Efficiency

  • Designed for mass production environments

  • Fast cycle times

  • Minimal tool wear

  • Low energy consumption compared to machining processes

✅ Adjustable Die Configurations

  • Equipped with interchangeable roller dies

  • Allows for flexibility in producing various thread sizes, pitches, and profiles (e.g., ISO metric, ACME, Buttress, Trapezoidal)

  • Die lengths may vary (e.g., 25 mm, 90 mm, 105 mm) depending on application requirements

✅ Thread Length Capability: Up to 75 mm

  • Enables long-length thread rolling on extended shafts and large fasteners

  • Suitable for applications like steering racks and long spline shafts

Working Principle

1. Clamping

  • The cylindrical blank (unthreaded workpiece) is securely held between centers or precision chucks.

  • Proper alignment is critical to ensure uniform thread formation and dimensional accuracy.

  • Clamping force is adjustable to accommodate different workpiece diameters and materials.

2. Rotation

  • Once clamped, the workpiece begins to rotate at a controlled speed, typically synchronized with the movement of the dies.

  • Rotation ensures even pressure distribution during the rolling process and helps achieve consistent thread geometry.

3. Feeding (ZR 90° Cross Feeding)

  • The movable roller die advances horizontally (at a 90° angle to the workpiece axis) toward the rotating blank.

  • This "ZR" feeding style allows for precise engagement of the dies with the workpiece.

  • Feed rate and pressure are carefully regulated to match material properties and thread specifications.

4. Rolling (Cold Forming Process)

  • As the moving die presses against the rotating blank, both dies apply high pressure to plastically deform the material, forming the external thread.

  • No material is removed — the metal is simply displaced into the desired thread profile.

  • Cold working enhances:

    • Surface hardness

    • Fatigue resistance

    • Tensile strength

    • Corrosion resistance due to improved surface finish

5. ✅ Release & Ejection

  • Once the thread has been fully formed, the pressure is released and the movable die retracts.

  • The finished part is automatically or manually ejected from the machine.

  • The cycle can then repeat, allowing for high-volume production with minimal downtime.
